YouScope is built by a community of researchers and developers. YouScope was initially developed by members of the Computational Systems Biology (CSB) group at ETH Zurich, Switzerland.

    Moritz Lang

    Initial author and main architect

Designed the core architecture and wrote most of the initial code that established YouScope as a flexible, scriptable microscope control platform. His work laid the foundation for systematic microscopy protocols, hardware abstraction, and extensibility through plugins, enabling YouScope to grow from an in-house tool into a broadly usable system for automated imaging. By introducing an additional abstraction layer on top of Micro-Manager’s device drivers, this design separates complex experimental protocols from low-level hardware control, enabling precise event timing, safe multi-threaded access to the microscope, and networked or coordinator-worker operation. The resulting user interface guides experimentalists toward reproducible, well-documented measurements without requiring deep technical training, while still leveraging Micro-Manager’s wide range of microscope drivers.

    Andreas P. Cuny

    Current maintainer and architect

Maintainer since 2022 and current developer. Led the upgrade of the Micro-Manager version to ensure compatibility with recent microscopes and authored several new plugins for microscope calibration, FAIR export, and custom microplate handling, as well as modern Python scripting support. Developed a new modular API for generic cell detection with interchangeable segmenters (CellX, StarDist, CellPose, FastER), quantifiers (CellX, CellProfiler), and trackers (Btrack, TrackMate, trackpy) that can be extended easily and used for feedback or smart microscopy applications. Introduced an AI assistant for creating microscope configurations, complex protocols, and general assistance with YouScope.cols and general assistance with YouScope.
